Cavities are a common term used to describe a modest sized area of tooth decay. Small to medium sized cavities can often be repaired with a standard filling. However, if a cavity is large or it has gone too long without proper treatment, it might compromise so much tooth enamel that not enough remains to anchor a filling.

In a case like this, our dentist, Dr. Hoang Truong may recommend replacing all of the tooth’s enamel with a crown made from either porcelain, gold or base metal alloys.

This generally requires two separate appointments. At the first appointment, our dentist will numb the area and use a drill to remove all the tooth enamel. This leaves behind an abutment containing the dentin, pulp, and root of the tooth.

They will then form a detailed impression of the area to serve as a guide for a dental lab that creates the final crown. At the end of the appointment, a hard plastic temporary crown is secured over the abutment to protect it.

When your new crown is ready, we will call you back in to have the temporary crown removed and the permanent crown cemented in place. With proper care and cleaning, it should last you for many years to come.
